SPC flooring has gained its popularity in the flooring industry. There are many issues that have contributed to its popularity, including the long history of SPC flooring, manufacturing methods and amazing features.
But it is undeniable that one of the reasons for its popularity is simple routine cleaning and maintenance. SPC flooring can be very durable, even up to 20 years, as long as it is well maintained. If you have ever wondered what you can do to extend the life of your SPC floor, here is everything you need to know.
1. Clean often
This may sound cliche, but regular cleaning is an effective way to help keep your SPC floor at its best shape.
You can use an ordinary broom to sweep the floor, or you can use a brushless vacuum and an electric broom to sweep. A special tool that you should avoid using, and cleaning your SPC floor is a stick vacuum, because it tends to damage the coating.
So how often should you sweep the floor?
Clean at least once a week to remove dust and loose dirt. If you have time, it is a good idea to sweep the floor after every use.
2. Mop occasionally
Sometimes, just cleaning is not enough.
In order to better keep the floor clean and stain-free, please use a damp cloth or mop to thoroughly clean the stains with a mild or neutral pH solution.
Don't risk using multi-surface cleaners, bleaches, detergents, strong abrasive cleaners (such as organic solvents, ammonium or alcohol detergents) to mop the floor.
However, remember that you should not mop the floor too frequently to avoid darkening the tiles. Excessive mopping of your SPC floor weakens the adhesive because water seeps into the middle.
That being said, you should also avoid being overwhelmed by excessive water while mopping. Water that penetrates through the joints and edges will also promote the growth of mold.
3. Battle spill immediately
Just wipe it with a damp cloth and you can immediately remove any spills. The longer the liquid stays on the floor, the more likely it is to form permanent stains.
Not sure what is an effective method?
This is very simple. Just wipe off the spill with a clean white cloth and rinse with water. Be sure to wipe dry after finishing.
However, some stubborn stains are more difficult to remove. These problems can be solved in several different ways...
In order to remove common stains such as fruit juice, red wine, food and grease, you may need to use SPC floor cleaner recommended by the floor supplier.
If you happen to have stubborn stains caused by markers, paint or lipstick, you can do this:
Take a clean white cloth and moisten it with isopropyl alcohol or mineral alcohol. Wipe off the stain and let it dry.
Hardened stains such as crayons, candle wax, and even bubble gum can be made brittle with ice and then gently scraped off with a plastic spatula.
You can also use a credit card or any non-abrasive plastic material to scrape it. Do not use steel wool and scouring powder, as this will damage the surface and make it look dull.
4. No steam cleaning
Steam cleaning is very convenient because you can clean, disinfect and dry immediately without using chemical cleaners. However, the problem is...
Hot steam actually does more harm than good for SPC floors. It is so serious that some of the damage it causes cannot be repaired.
Let's see why steam cleaning your SPC floor is the worst reason.
Since the steam cleaner is disinfecting your floor, the steam generated can reach above 90 degrees Celsius to kill bacteria and bacteria.
This excess heat and moisture can penetrate the joints and edges of the SPC floor and can weaken the adhesive and the layers of your wood or tile structure. Not only that, it can also cause problems such as floor warping, cupping, bending, and blistering.
Needless to say, damage caused by steam cleaners is usually not covered by the warranty. So why let your floor bear such a risk? Just skip steam cleaning in your daily, more durable SPC floor.
5. Reduce dust
Buy a high-quality carpet at the entrance, a stain-free or rubber-free doormat, to prevent any sand, loose soil, gravel, dust, and other dust from being brought into the house. It is best to put a doormat at each entrance.
Here is one of the most effective ways to reduce dust: simply adopt a "no shoes" policy. This can further eliminate possible dirt outdoors while keeping the SPC floor hygienic.
Placing mats, carpets, or runners in crowded areas is another way to reduce floor dirt. Be careful when choosing a mat, because you want to avoid mats made of materials such as cocoa fiber, colored rubber or latex, which can damage your floor surface.
6. Reduce wear
If possible, take off your shoes when you step on the floor. This can reduce the scratches caused by the stones and sand you carry with your shoes.
When moving furniture, use quarter-inch plywood and hardwood paneling to protect the SPC floor to prevent scratches and signs of wear. You can place non-fading protectors under movable furniture such as chairs, sofas, cabinets and tables to further prevent any dents.
For safety, when you move large furniture and heavy electrical appliances, please prepare a hard track to protect your floor.
If you like to keep pets, be careful, because animal paws will also leave signs of wear on the floor. Trimming your pet's nails and claws regularly will help reduce possible scratches. It is also common sense to avoid using abrasive tools on SPC floors.
